CHE210 – Material and Energy Balances (@UIC)

Spring 2015

Instructor: BS Akpa

Catalog Description: Material and energy balances applied to chemical systems. Introduction to chemical and physical properties. Introduction to the use of computers for chemical process calculations. Pre/Co-requisite(s): CHE 201 and CHE 205.

Scope: In CHE 201, you will have become familiar with energy and entropy balances for single-component systems. In this course, we will extend those concepts to include multicomponent, multiphase, and reacting systems.  We will look at more complex processes involving multiple feed and effluent streams, and you will be introduced to unit operations such as reactors and separators. This course lays out the fundamentals of the chemical engineering approach and will provide a foundation for all your subsequent work as a ChemE student and subsequently as a ChemE professional.

Classes: We will meet Mondays, Tuesdays,Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10:00 – 10:50 AM in CEB 230.  The Friday meeting will be a discussion session. Attendance for the discussion session is mandatory for this 4-credit hour class. During the discussion session, homework problems and additional examples will be worked in small groups.  Some new material will be presented.
